BRIEF HISTORY OF HHPA
The Harahan Horseshoe Pitchers Association became the first
sanctioned courts in Louisiana in early 1982 when
Jack Atchley
received charter for State of Louisiana from the National
Horseshoe Pitchers Association
and the Louisiana Horseshoe
Pitchers Association.
Horseshoe pitching started on three courts in Jack's
backyard where they had league play.
When the crowd grew, the
city of Harahan was contacted and we were allowed to construct 7
courts
on the corner of Soniat Playground and later expanded to
10 courts.
The HHPA was also the site of the 1st state singles tournament
in 1985 and again in 1986, 1987, and 1988.
When other
clubs were founded, sites for the tournament were rotated. The
state doubles tournament was also started in Harahan.
Both Jack and Elise Atchley were instrumental in starting and making the HHPA in Harahan what it is today.
